YRU Review - TUNE Tie Dye

A brutally honest look at YRU

So you probably noticed in an Instagram post I was wearing these babies. Now, there's a reason I'll share this review here and not on the new blog, because it's a negative review with swears and I don't want too much negativity (or swears) in my writing any more, but I have to share with my alt/goth readers just how bad this experience was...

Some time after Boxing Day I was perusing the many online catalogs for deals, and if you felt like maybe you missed out on something you can rest assured that you really didn't. I think I saw mostly 20% off sales, or those obnoxious ones that preach "up to" 70% off but the reality is is that only one product in the whole inventory is 70% off, everything else is maybe only 10% off. I worked in retail, I'm not new to these tricks! I was also not new to purchasing from YRU so when I saw the shoes of my dreams - TUNE in rainbow tie dye - listed at 40% off I thought, "Score! This is the time to buy!" Only to learn weeks later that they constantly mark shoes down by 40%. My concern was that my favorite shoes would sell out, so it wasn't exactly an impulse buy. I didn't want to have to pay double or triple the price on Ebay years afterwards when they become regarded as "rare" or "collectible". I've had that happen with other shoes and I wasn't going to see it happen again.

Speaking of impulse buy...there was regret. I spent more than I wanted to but that's because YRU are schemey as hell.

I think perhaps the biggest piss off for this purchase was the shipping. So I paid for my shoes using Paypal, it's my preferred method, but YRU charged me for the shoes first. The shipping method wasn't included nor were the options revealed until after the purchase. Yep. They take your money for your shoes THEN YOU GET TO SEE THE SHIPPING COST. And what a kick in the balls that is at a whopping $40 USD. After you choose the only international shipping method available they charge it to your Paypal account a second time. And guess what? If they fuck up and don't ship it correctly they'll refund you the cost of the shoes but you are fuck out of luck as far as shipping is concerned. Now why is that acceptable for a big box company but Etsy sellers like me get would get chewed out for withholding shipping refunds?! Ordinarily I wouldn't be too surprised by that policy... but at $40 USD you damn well ship it properly!! I've read a handful of nasty remarks on their Facebook page from people who definitely did not receive their shoes - one look at the visitor's comments should've put me off of buying from them entirely but I didn't think to check it out *grumbles*.

It seemed really fucking sketchy to take my money and then lay the shipping cost on me like some kind of surprise. I've even read a comment from an American buyer who complained that she saw a standard shipping option available and clicked it only to have it "disappear" part way through the transaction and turn into EXPRESS! And I imagine YRU's response is probably something along the lines of it's a programmer's error when in reality they just want to fuck you six ways until Sunday.

I was pretty pissed that the Express (Priority) method was the only shipping option available for international buyers. It's the most expensive and claims it'll be here in 6-10 business days, but what good does that do for me when YRU is too fucking lazy to get off their asses and post my package?! If I'm paying for express it better be processed the week of purchase. It took them over a week's worth of business days to process it! I live in Canada, I'm right next to America, I'm well aware of their holidays and they were not on holiday. They just didn't give an ass.

My shoes did arrive although it was cutting it close to the 10 day mark, adding the week on top of that it seemed like forever. I was pretty ticked and while the shoes look nice enough I don't think they command the hefty price tag (even on sale it seems a bit much). There are noticeable glue marks in some areas, the sole is soft and cushioned, the fit is decent, the lining is a bit scratchy. I've only worn them once as of yet and I'm concerned about how well they hold up, apparently YRU platform shoes are notorious for falling apart.

Honestly, the whole experience has left a bad taste in my mouth. Are the shoes worth $100? Nope. Maybe $60 in store, which is what I would have liked to pay before they dropped express shipping on me. I would've preferred to put that $100 towards a brand/company that respects its customers and doesn't take whatever opportunity to screw them over (seriously, check out their store policies it's basically telling you that they reserve the right to change everything and anything at a moments notice, hence the disappearing shipping options).

Seriously, fuck YRU. If you land on their site you might as well ask yourself, YRU fucking shopping here? It's pointless. I wouldn't buy from their site again. I wouldn't buy their shoes again. After hearing the nightmare stories of platforms falling off in three usages, customers receiving moldy used shoes, non-existent customer support, and schemey underhanded tactics to charge me more money in shipping, I fucking hate these assholes.

Rant over.

  1. I have their platforms, which are still holding up well. I bought them from this random LA-based mom-and-pop store site I never heard of to avoid being overcharged lol. I remember thinking it was too expensive anywhere else. Sucks you had to go through that and thanks for the warning

    1. I definitely recommend buying their shoes from other stores, but preferably brick and mortar, it seems like online people run into nothing but problems. I'm under the impression it has something to do with YRU's warehouse. I like my shoes well enough, but the way they do business is so bad it's tainted them a little.
